In the late 1920's a small group of people began worshipping
with prayer meetings that were held at the home of Mrs. Georganna
Poole. Mrs. Poole is credited as the founder of the church. The
meetings were held on each Wednesday night.
Attendance grew and a decision was made to organize a church.
Worship services began in the Hicks building on the corner of
Club and Third Street (now Onslow), thus the name of our original
church was Hicks Chapel Baptist Church. Reverend Anderson Sturdivant
became the first pastor. Land was purchased on the 1200 block
of 4th Street, now Berkeley St. and the people of God built a
church edifice.
By 1952 the name was changed to Saint James Baptist Church. From
1936 to 1987, the church was progressively lead by 7 pastors.
Pastor Luther K. Brooks was sent to Saint James Baptist Church
in February of 1988. With the vision 'god has given him, he has
implemented changes that have resurrected a new trend in this
body of Christ. Under his leadership the church obtained non-profit
incorporation status in November of 1994 to enable us to address
specific facets of our community growth and changes.
On November 14, 1999 our congregation marched from 1225 Berkeley
into our newly renovated 25,000 sq. ft. family life center at
1305 W. Club Boulevard, formerly known as the old Walltown School.
